To establish the nature of the patient’s visual impairment, ophthalmologists conduct exams and tests. They look for macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts, among other things. Ophthalmologists provide prescriptions if the problem can be corrected with corrective lenses or medicines. Patients with eye injuries may be examined to see if surgery is a viable option.
If surgery is required, an ophthalmologist uses a laser to operate on the patient’s eyes. An ophthalmologic surgeon may remove cataracts, transplant a cornea, or cure a patient’s nearsightedness. He may also treat tumors or growths on the ocular nerve.
